  1. In 1977, artist Walter De Maria installed his New York Earth Room on the second floor of a gallery on Wooster street. Over 3,600 square feet of floor space, the soil sculpture consists of 250 cubic yards of earth and goes 22 inches deep. Bill Dilworth, the project’s caretaker of 24 years, still waters, weeds and rakes the dirt every single week.

  1. Sophie Calle’s projects tend to involve immersing herself in the lives of strangers. In 1983, she found an address book on the streets of Paris belonging to a “Pierre D”. She began to contact each person listed inside, asking to meet with them to learn about the book’s owner, and published accounts of her meetings with a French newspaper. Pierre found out and threatened to sue, after which Sophie agreed to not republish the work until after his death.
